An orthodontic emergency refers to any situation where you experience significant discomfort, damage to your braces or other orthodontic appliances, or an issue that could impede your treatment progress. While many problems that arise during orthodontic treatment can be managed at home, there are instances when professional intervention is necessary.
Orthodontic emergencies can be categorized into two types:
Brackets are the small metal or ceramic pieces that are bonded to your teeth to hold the archwire in place. Occasionally, a bracket may become loose or detach from the tooth. This is often caused by eating hard or sticky foods, accidentally biting down on something hard, or trauma to the mouth.
Orthodontic wires are designed to shift your teeth into the correct alignment. However, as your teeth move, the wire can sometimes shift or protrude from the back brackets, causing irritation to your gums or cheeks.
It’s normal to experience some soreness or discomfort after getting braces or having them adjusted. This is a sign that your teeth are moving into their new positions. The discomfort usually subsides after a few days.
Orthodontic bands are the metal rings that are placed around your molars to anchor your braces. If a band becomes loose or breaks, it can affect the stability of your braces.
If you’ve completed your orthodontic treatment and are using a retainer, it’s important to wear it as prescribed to maintain your results. However, retainers can sometimes break or become lost.
Braces can sometimes cause small sores or ulcers in the mouth, particularly in the first few weeks of treatment. These sores are often caused by the friction between the brackets or wires and the soft tissues of your mouth.
In the event of a blow to the face or mouth, you may experience damage to your braces or teeth. This can happen during sports, falls, or other accidents.
There are no true emergency situations with aligner trays, as there are no sharp components or devices that can detach inside your mouth. Aligners sometimes present challenges that can be easily managed at home.
If you switch to a new set of trays and they don’t seem to fit properly, use your Chewies™ to improve the fit. If you see air bubbles inside your aligners or they aren’t fitting snugly over your teeth, gently bite down on a Chewie for 2-3 minutes to help press the aligner into place.
If this doesn’t help, you can also return to wearing your previous set of aligners for another week or two before switching to the new set. Your teeth may simply need a bit more time to shift.
If you lose your tray, try placing the next set to see if they fit. If so, simply wear those trays for the remainder of time left for your lost trays, plus the time advised for the new trays. If the next set doesn’t fit, wear the most recent aligners you have and call the office to order a replacement set.
While some orthodontic emergencies are unavoidable, there are steps you can take to reduce the likelihood of encountering problems during your treatment:
Hard, sticky, or crunchy foods can damage your braces, causing loose brackets, broken wires, or bent appliances. To prevent emergencies, avoid foods such as:
Braces can trap food and plaque, increasing the risk of gum disease and tooth decay. Brush and floss regularly, and use special tools like orthodontic flossers or water flossers to clean your braces thoroughly. Keeping your teeth and braces clean reduces the chance of problems developing during treatment.
If you participate in contact sports, wearing a mouthguard is essential to protect your braces and teeth from injury. Ask Dr. Thompson about custom-made orthodontic mouthguards designed to fit comfortably over your braces.
Routine check-ups at Lovely Smiles Orthodontics are vital to ensure your braces are functioning correctly and that no issues are developing. Dr. Thompson will monitor your progress and make any necessary adjustments to keep your treatment on track.
Not all orthodontic issues require an emergency visit. However, it’s important to know when a problem requires immediate attention and when it can wait until your next scheduled appointment. In general, contact Dr. Thompson’s office if you experience any of the following:
