Your Step-by-Step Guide to Getting Started with Invisalign

The Invisalign® clear aligner system is well-known for its ability to straighten a crooked smile, but what exactly does a treatment plan entail? Read on to find out what to expect when you start with Invisalign.

In the not-so-distant past, traditional metal braces were the only solution for straightening your teeth, but that’s no longer the case. Over 14 million people have transformed their smiles with Invisalign® clear aligners. These comfortable, clear aligners can discreetly correct orthodontic issues, such as overbite and crowding, without the hassles of metal brackets and wires.

While you might be familiar with the concept of clear aligner trays, you might have questions about the process, including what you can expect before, during, and after your treatment. Dr. Nicole Thompson, DMD, our expert orthodontist in Richmond, TX, is here to share what you can expect when you choose Invisalign clear aligners to straighten your teeth.

What to expect during your consultation

The first appointment is a consultation to ensure that Invisalign is the right solution for you. This appointment is complimentary. During your consultation, all your initial orthodontic records are taken. These include your x-rays, photos of your face and teeth. A digital scan or impression is also taken. Thankfully, you won’t have to deal with goopy physical impressions. Our team uses the iTero Element® scanner to produce precise 3D images of your teeth. Dr. Thompson also examines your mouth and assesses your orthodontic needs. Invisalign can treat many orthodontic issues, including crowding, gaps, crookedness, and malocclusion. Although Invisalign can correct many bite issues — overbite, underbite, crossbite — it might not be suitable if you have severe malocclusion. A consultation ensures that you receive the right orthodontic treatment for your needs.

During your consultation, you can also ask questions about Invisalign, how it works, or your potential treatment plan. Contact us to learn more.

What to expect after your first appointment

Once Dr. Thompson confirms that Invisalign is right for you, it’s time to get started with your treatment plan. Your Invisalign treatment plan is customized to your unique anatomy. Your trays are created from the highly accurate scans taken with the iTero Element® scanner. Because of the accuracy of the scans, the aligners usually fit perfectly every time.

Not only do they fit snugly against your teeth, but they’re also comfortable. Invisalign uses a soft, BPA-free material called SmartTrack to create your trays. Once your trays are ready, it’s time for your official treatment to start! It usually takes 2-4 weeks for the aligners come in.

What to expect during your treatment

Every 1-2 weeks (or as directed), you’ll replace your tray with a new set of aligner trays, and each new tray gently shifts your teeth closer and closer to their ideal location. You can expect a little tenderness when using a new tray, but this is temporary. You can expect to wear your trays for 20-22 hours each day.

Through your Invisalign journey, you can plan on regular check-ups in our office about every 8-10 weeks. During these check-ins, our team ensures that your treatment plan is progressing.

Even though you’re wearing your trays for most of the day, Invisalign is generally a more comfortable orthodontic option, especially when compared with metal braces). Although individual results vary (due to the severity of orthodontic issues and your diligence in wearing your trays every day), you may start to see changes in as little as eight weeks. The average treatment time with clear aligners is 12-18 months.

What to expect after your treatment is complete

After your Invisalign treatment, it’s time to celebrate! To maintain your pearly whites, continue your at-home oral care routine and regular dental cleanings.

But most importantly, make sure to wear your retainers. Retainers will prevent your teeth from shifting after orthodontic treatment. If you do not wear retainers, your teeth can return to their original positions. Then, you will have to start treatment all over again.
